What impact will HS2 have on Ashley

A small group of ramblers from local groups gathered for a short walk recently in the parish of Ashley to see what would be the likely impact on local paths when and if the HS2 is built. Together with Landscape Architect and University Lecturer Jo Philips the group set out from Ashley Church armed with maps and plans of the proposed route of HS2. Walking at a very leisurely pace the group made frequent stops to study and to discuss the route and what would be lost from the landscape. The small village of Ashley lies close to the M56 motorway which on this fine sunny March morning was a constant drone of traffic noise in the background. Also nearby is Manchester Airport and here the noise pollution was intermittent but not too noticeable on this occasion which was probably due to the wind direction.

The group set out by following  Ashley footpath number 6 which will be dissected by HS2 before heading east on Ashley footpath number 8 which unfortunately lies right along the path of HS2. In this area HS2 will be roughly at ground level but will rise to cross the Altrincham to Knutsford  railway line.  Heading north east the group continued by later joining Ashley footpath number 20 to reach Ashley Primary School. Speaking with one of the teachers the general consensus is that most local people are against the HS2 and in the area we were often reminded by the ‘No to HS2’ signs posted on buildings and gates. Walking along Back Lane eastwards, HS2 will run across agricultural land just to the south of the lane but  will have a major impact on the hamlet of Thorns Green where properties will have to be demolished.

The Bollin Valley is the next obstacle to cross and here the HS2 will be on a viaduct across the wooded valley. On this fine March morning bird song was much in evidence in this little oasis of wooded but rather muddy countryside.

The group continued along what was a rather muddy Bollin Valley to return to Ashley via Ashley Road and passing historic Ashley Hall.
