Ramblers have designed some training modules to provide leaders with information and tools to help them lead safe, welcoming and enjoyable walks. Before leading any walks, you need to be registered as a volunteer Walk Leader and to complete these training modules (or alternatively hold a Mountain Training Association qualification). You can complete the training individually online, or periodically we have training events to complete the modules in a group setting.
Here’s what to do
- Contact the Membership Secretary (
This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. ), who will arrange for you to be recorded as a Walk Leader volunteer by Ramblers Central Office (CO). CO will send you a ‘welcome to volunteering email’ and confirm details of how to access the training online. The Membership Secretary will let you know if there are any upcoming group training events.
2. Set up a Ramblers Account: If you don’t already have a My Ramblers account you will need to set one up: Create a Ramblers Account
3. Access the training modules online
Once you are recorded as a Ramblers Walk Leader volunteer, you can access the online training via the training library on the main Ramblers website here .
(To log in to the library, you’ll need to log in to your My Ramblers Account)
When you have finished a module, it is automatically marked online as being completed.
The three mandatory elements are:
- Walk Leader Handbook (click the link to access the handbook and click the button at the end to confirm you have read it)
- Walk Leadership Foundations (approx. 60-90 minutes)
- Preventing & Managing Incidents (approx. 60 minutes)
Help with leading walks is available
If you would like help with leading your first walk, we can put you in touch with an experienced walk leader to give you some pointers and, if you wish, to go out with you on a recce.
If you have any queries or need help with any of the above, please contact the Membership Secretary (
