Disposable barbecue identified as the most probable cause
Following an investigation, Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service identified a discarded disposable barbecue found in the area as the most probable cause of the fire. Anyone with relevant information to contact police (Operation Yearling, crime reference 26000592358).
The incident demonstrates how quickly careless behaviour can have a devastating effect on woodland, wildlife habitats and the wider countryside—particularly during warm, dry weather.
Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service advises against using disposable barbecues in open countryside because of the fire risk. Barbecues should never be left unattended and must be completely extinguished and cold before being moved or disposed of.

- Keep emergency access routes clear at all times.
- Avoid using disposable barbecues in open countryside.
- Never light fires near woodland, grass or other dry vegetation.
- Take litter and glass bottles home.
- Extinguish cigarettes and other smoking materials properly.
