East Cheshire Ramblers Weekend Away in Whitby
The Royal Hotel Whitby
Friday 16th to Monday 19th October 2026
We last had a weekend here in 2008 so time to revisit this delightful seaside town.Whitby is dominated by the cliff-top ruins of a beautiful 13th century Abbey. This quaint maritime town, with its old cobbled streets, picturesque houses and sandy blue flag beach, is set among fine stretches of coast with spectacular cliffs and bays including Robin Hood’s Bay and Staithes. The harbour is attractive and always has a variety of boats to view. 199 steps lead down from the Abbey to the old town where you find an array of unique shops offering local crafts, famous Whitby Jet jewellery, maritime memorabilia and antiques. A short drive from Whitby one is out on the moors with the possibility of visiting the picturesque ‘Heartbeat’ village of Goathland or the steam railway as it makes its way through Levisham to Pickering.Getting to Whitby
On a good run it is about 2 and half hours from East Cheshire via the M60, M62, M1, A64 and the A169. There are plenty of possibilities for a day out on the way for those who do not work on Fridays. If you take this route you will pass around the York bypass, very close to Castle Howard or Goathland. There are other routes avoiding the M62 which can be used.
Walks
I hope to offer the three grades of Walks on both days and am planning to take you to some of the attractions mentioned above. There is an excellent public bus service along the coast which we should be able to utilise.
You are very welcome to join the walks but stay elsewhere in Whitby. You could join an evening meal but would have to choose from their standard menu.
Accommodation The Royal Hotel Whitby
This hotel is situated on the West Cliff close to the Whalebones with views over the harbour and sea. It used to be a Shearings hotel so catered for groups. Some rooms have been refurbished but not all. You can read the reviews which are mixed but all agree the breakfast is good. It is certainly good value as so many hotels are very expensive and do not cater for single occupancy. We would have a 3 course set dinner each night.
3 nights would be £119 per single room per night DBB & £159 per double room per night DBB
2 nights would be £129 per single room per night DBB & £169 per double room per night DBB
It is also possible to reserve an upgraded room for a supplement of £30 or £50 per night.
