East Cheshire Ramblers Weekend Away in Helmsley North Yorkshire

Friday 7th October to Sunday/Monday 9th/10th October 2022

First Briefing Note

Helmsley was the destination for a weekend away back in 2009 so worth another visit. It is a market town situated at the foot of the moors at the junction with the flat Vale of Pickering. It is very attractive with a large market square, small shops and a Castle (English Heritage).  Nearby Duncombe park is the home of Lord Feversham who has always had a considerable input into the town. It is also the start of the Cleveland way.

Getting to Helmsley

It is about 120 miles from Wilmslow and takes about 2+ hrs. M62. A1M, A170 but there are other more attractive routes.

Walks

I hope to offer the 3 grades of walks on both days and I am happy to lead one on each day (long if needed), but will require offers of help to lead the other walks.

Saturday Group Evening meal

This will be at the Feathers Hotel, which is in the Market Place.  They have a large function room.  I will circulate a meal choice form in due course, the cost being about £30 for 3 courses. They can cater for large numbers so there will be no problem there. I have not eaten there recently but it has always been fine in the past.

Friday evening meal

There will be no formal meal. On a later briefing note I will give a list of some of the other restaurant options available, and we might be able to arrange for smaller groups to eat together in a couple of venues in Helmsley.

Accommodation

Please use an internet search engine to check details/trip advisor etc. At present there seem to be a fair number of rooms, but weekends in Helmsley are very popular.

Main option – The Feathers hotel – this needs to be booked directly with them and I have 12 rooms reserved in my name so take one of those

You need to phone 01439 770275 and ignore nos 1 to 5 and enter 0.  This will put you through to the Hotel itself, not central reservations (which services 24 hotels). Mary O’Neil is the contact I have used.

The deal they have done for us is much better than through central reservations.
